I love the new shears, they cut great thru the hull. The handle grips are much easier on my hand. These red shears were not made for this purpose. They were made for cutting fabric and very light wires. We sell them knowing that some of them will fail but about 98 percent of them will give excellent service. We have tried the very expensive ones and they lasted no longer than these. The ones we sell were labeled carbon steel. We replace the initial failures out of our pocket as the manufacturers certainly will not. Now Red ones are out of stock. Now we found a new white shear which will be much better than the red ones. It is much stronger than red. We are confident your overall experience will be very satisfactory. . I used the original red handled shear as correctly as possible. Cutting the shell with brute power AND Not Twisting the implement for further leverage in breaking the hard-*** shell yet it still suddenly broke a jaw of the shear. Hopefully the new white handled shears will withstand the forces needed to cut the shell better than its predecessor. Understandable if the life of the new version is similar to the old. It’s just a lot of shear forces at work. Even though this might sound like a criticism, it’s not! These red or white handled shears are the perfect implements for extracting consistent whole quarters nut meats. Their limited thickness is necessary for perfect shear location to crack the stubborn shell that sets the nut free. Another alloy of metal might make the shear too expensive for the extra longevity one would hope for but it might be worth exploring! So, I’m just figuring the cost of replacement as a necessary “expendable”. It’s a fine instrument and a requirement for the most expeditious way of getting the “goods”. I’m very satisfied with the new version…time will tell how well they hold up (white handled version).

I have cut into over two hundred black walnuts so far and the white shears are working very well! I have cut into black walnut shells the full length of the shear blades with no problem after cracking them open with GGG !
